Even though Tolland County has remained relatively rural with a strong agricultural component to its economy, it is the University of Connecticut Campus in Storrs that is the engine of local business and industry. UCONN is the largest employer in the eastern part of the state, which combined with Eastern Connecticut State University, provides more than 26 percent of the Tolland County workforce with university related employment.
Other major employers within the region are Windham Community Hospital, Brand Rex Company, Eastbrook Mall, Stop & Shop and SNET plus there are many small, family owned businesses engaged in servicing an ever expanding travel and tourism trade. 21 percent of the workforce is employed in service industries, 20 percent in the retail sector and 19 percent in manufacturing. Additionally, nearby Hartford provides employment in the insurance and financial sectors for many residents while others commute to jobs in Providence and Boston.

The population of Coventry is centered on two distinct areas know as North Coventry and South Coventry. The old center of the town is in South Coventry, near the intersection of State Route 31 (Main Street) and State Route 275 (Stonehouse Road). In the 19th century, there was a small industrial center including mills powered by the water from Coventry Lake Brook as it flowed towards the Willimantic River. Only one factory remains today, that of the American Thread Company. The center of North Coventry is at the intersection of Main Street and US Route 44 (officially Boston Turnpike, but usually referred to simply as "Route 44" by residents). Near this intersection, two shopping plazas provide some local employment but most town residents work in nearby Hartford at one of the many insurance companies or at the UCONN campus in Storrs.
Tolland is very family-oriented and mainly residential, although the town has been expanding in recent years with new commercial developments.
